The Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC) released its March 2023 Report to Congress on Medicaid and CHIP today, recommending a series of measures aimed at improving the collection of race and ethnicity data, increasing transparency in nursing facility payment data, and giving states greater flexibility in following Medicare drug coverage decisions. It also includes MACPAC’s annual, statutorily required report examining payment policy for safety net hospitals.

MACPAC Releases 2022 Edition of MACStats: Medicaid and CHIP Data Book
The Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC) today released the 2022 edition of the MACStats: Medicaid and CHIP Data Book, with updated data on national and state Medicaid and State Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) enrollment, spending, benefits, and beneficiaries’ health, service use, and access to care. As of July 2022, almost 90 million people were enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP.
MACPAC Releases June 2022 Report to Congress
The Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission released its June 2022 Report to Congress on Medicaid and CHIP today, recommending a series of measures that Congress could take to create a better system for monitoring access to care for Medicaid beneficiaries, improve the oversight and transparency of managed care directed payments, increase access to vaccines for adults enrolled in Medicaid, encourage the uptake of health information technology (IT) in behavioral health, and better integrate care for people who are eligible for both the Medicaid and Medicare programs. In addition, the Commission offers policy levers that states and the federal government can use to promote equity in Medicaid.

The Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC) released its March 2022 Report to Congress on Medicaid and CHIP today, examining issues of specific interest to Congress that address: transitioning Medicaid beneficiaries out of institutions and back into the community under the Money Follows the Person (MFP) program; improving vaccination rates and access for adults enrolled in Medicaid; and assessing hospital payment policy for the nation’s safety net hospitals.

The Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC) today released the 2021 edition of the MACStats: Medicaid and CHIP Data Book, with updated data on national and state Medicaid and State Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) enrollment, spending, benefits, and beneficiaries’ health, service use, and access to care. From July 2020 to May 2021, enrollment in Medicaid and CHIP increased by about 8.9 percent, driven in large part by the economic downturn created by the COVID-19 pandemic as well as federal requirements that states not disenroll individuals during the COVID-19 public health emergency.
MACPAC Executive Director to Retire in 2022
The Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC) today announced that Executive Director Anne L. Schwartz, PhD, plans to retire in spring 2022. Dr. Schwartz has led the organization for nearly a decade, first joining MACPAC in 2012.

The Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC) today released the 2020 edition of the MACStats: Medicaid and CHIP Data Book, with updated data on national and state Medicaid and State Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) enrollment, spending, benefits, and beneficiaries’ health, service use, and access to care. From July 2019 to July 2020, enrollment in Medicaid and CHIP increased by about 5.6 percent, driven in large part by the economic downturn created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
